PMA Celebrates Habitat For Humanity Housing Project Launch
September 18, 2003 --- CALGARY. Poon McKenzie Architects was pleased to participate in the launch of a Habitat for Humanity project in Calgary’s south west community of Dover
A ceremony commemorating the start of a 28-unit affordable housing development project was hosted by Calgary Community Land Trust. The CCLT organized procurement of land for the project through unique multi-level government and corporate partnership initiatives.
Poon McKenzie Architects will be the Architect of Record for the residential project, the first multi-family development ever undertaken by Habitat for Humanity.
"Designs for this project are unique because they take into account affordability strategies in terms of construction and maintenance costs with the inclusion of sustainability factors," explains PMA Project Architect, Wolf Geisler, MAAA, MAIBC. "A creative use of passive solar power, window placement and landscaping is allowing us to offer residences that successfully respond to affordability criteria in economically and environmentally sustainable ways."
The project includes 28 three bedroom townhomes with private yards, central parking and public use green spaces.
"We’re thrilled at the opportunity to participate in a project that allows us to support community-based & government programs for creation of affordable residences for Calgarians," adds Geisler.
Design and construction of the project is expected to take about 16 -18 months to complete.
