PMA's Bang & Olufsen Building Wins Calgary Heritage Award
June 11, 2003 --- CALGARY. Poon McKenzie Architects' were presented with a 2003 Calgary Heritage Award in the category of New Design in a Heritage Context for their recently completed Bang & Olufsen Retail and Office Building.
The award was presented by Mayor Dave Bronconnier to PMA Principal Ronald Poon at a semi-private ceremony in Calgary's Old City Hall.
The Bang & Olufsen Building was constructed on a formerly vacant lot sited between two existing historic buildings in the heart of Calgary's distinctive Stephen Avenue Mall (8th Avenue). The building was designed for internationally renowned audio-visual equipment retailer, Bang & Olufsen.
"In order to creatively combine elements of both old & new, the design team approached the building with a goal of re-interpreting the traditional in a modern expression," explains PMA's Ronald Poon. "The building had to capture early 20th Century design elements while delivering the sleek, modern aesthetics required by the building's high-tech occupant."
The Calgary Heritage Awards are announced annually by the City of Calgary's Heritage Authority.
